SSDI & SSI: A Few Frequently Asked Questions

My Claim Was Denied,
What Should I Do Now?

The Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) and supplemental security income (SSI) programs do a great many people a great deal of good. At the same time, these programs are huge, rule-bound and not generally user-friendly.

As an attorney with over 30 years of experience helping people in the Lincoln and Omaha areas of Nebraska to navigate the SSDI and SSI systems, I know that after the Social Security Administration denies your claim, you have questions. You may also be feeling angry or overwhelmed.

Do not give up. Most initial claims are denied. This is simply just one more step in the process of obtaining benefits — a process I have helped countless others to successfully complete. To learn more about how I can help you with your claim, just call or contact me directly for a free consultation.

Do disabilities have to be physical in nature? No. In fact, SSDI and SSI benefits are approved for thousands of people with disabling mental and psychological impairments each year. Recognized conditions include depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. That said — correct documentation of these types of disabilities is essential.

My injury won't show up on an X-ray or MRI, is there a way I can still qualify for benefits? Yes. I have helped people with chronic back and neck pain, repetitive stress injuries, heart conditions and other "non-obvious" disabilities to obtain SSDI and SSI benefits. Again, the key to success with these hard to prove conditions is proper documentation.

What disability benefits are available to children? Although children under the age of 18 are not eligible for social security disability benefits (a program based on work history) — they are eligible for supplemental security income benefits (a program based on need). Specific benefits available to children with disabilities include monthly financial assistance, employment support and Medicaid.

In addition, to helping minor children obtain these benefits — I also help adults who have been disabled since childhood with the process of applying for and obtaining SSDI benefits based on their parents work history.
